OUR STORY
SUPPIAH & PARTNERS was established in 2007 by Suppiah Muthusamy, a direct descendent of rubber plantation indentured labourers, during the British occupation of Malaya.
Growing up in underprivileged conditions in a rubber plantation in Pagoh, where food and money were scarce, he understood that opportunities for furthering his education were limited. Thus in 1970, after completing his Higher School Certificate (a pre-university entrance exam before the 1980s) in High School, Muar, he accepted a stint with Bernama, through the National Union of Plantation Workers. Here he dabbled in a bit of journalism before moving to The Star and later, worked briefly as a public relations assistant at Motorola (1972 – 1974).
In 1974, he joined the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs as an enforcement officer, working in different states in Malaysia (Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Pulau Pinang and Kelantan). Between 1990 and 1992, he served as the Director of Enforcement Division in Johor, before taking up the same role in Negeri Sembilan. In this season he oversaw the prosecution of many cases in courts. This is possibly where the soft tugs and inclination for a career in law began.
In 1995, at the age of 46, he decided to pursue a degree in law. With the support of his wife Madam Kanamah who was working at GlaxoSmithkline at the time, he finally put aside enough money for his tertiary education, while simultaneously raising two teenagers.
“I remember I was working in Negeri Sembilan. I’d finish work at 4.15pm, then drive to the Goon Institute in KL where I had signed up for a twinning programme.”
In the year 2000, upon completing 25 years in government service, Suppiah opted for retirement, and diverged into a career in law. He later set up his own practice, in 2007.
In 2023, one of Suppiah’s intrepid teenagers would take over the running of this firm.
